Kanata Youth Basketball Association / Ottawa Next Level are excited to announce the return of the KYBA-ONL Summer League!!

In the summer of 2019 – prior to the COVID-19 pandemic – KYBA/ONL hosted a very popular summer league that was held in indoor gyms.  The objective of the summer league was fun times through friendly games.

That objective hasn’t changed for summer 2021, however, the format will be a bit different as we take the game outside.  KYBA will be booking the best outdoor courts in Kanata to stage evening games during the week.  The plan is to have leagues of 4 teams with 10 players per team.

KYBA will follow current Public Health guidelines as well as Ontario Basketball Association recommendations with respect to any game modifications that may be required.

There will be leagues for a range of ages.  Boys and girls who are going into Grade 3 to Grade 10 will find a summer league for them.  The leagues are based on the school grade that players are entering for the upcoming 2021-22 school season.

  • *now added* NOVICE LEAGUE FOR PLAYERS WITH AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF ORGANIZED LEAGUE EXPERIENCEplayers going into Grade 3-4 (birth years 2012 & 2013)
  • ATOM LEAGUE; players going into Grade 5-6 (birth years 2010 & 2011)

  • BANTAM LEAGUE; players going into Grade 7-8 (birth years 2008 & 2009)

  • MIDGET LEAGUE; players going into Grade 9-10 (birth years 2006 & 2007)

Each league will be limited to 40 players (4 teams of 10).  Therefore, KYBA-ONL Summer League registration will be limited to facilitate a 4-team league schedule where each league plays on a consistent weeknight.

The planned schedules are to hold games on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Depending on registration levels, some leagues may be combined and/or the league may run with less than 4 teams.

Note: Although we hope weather doesn’t disturb the summer league schedule, there is a possibility of a make-up game from a rain-out being scheduled on a different day.

Each league will run for a total of 8 weeks, which allows for a 6-game “season schedule” that is followed by a 2-week “playoff period”.  Thus, each team will play a total of 8 games.  The KYBA-ONL Summer league is expected to start in late July and finish in early September.

Note that the KYBA-ONL Summer leagues are open to players of all abilities although having played some level of organized basketball is recommended.  There will be no practices, or skills training/coaching.  The main goal is to welcome players back to the sport.  The teams in each league will be balanced and the focus is entirely on having fun and celebrating the return-to-play.

The registration fee for the KYBA-ONL Summer League (8-week season) is tentatively set at $70 (to cover the outdoor court rental costs and game officiating costs).

Looking forward to seeing you on the courts soon!

Lance Greger – KYBA Director of Spring & Summer Programs

Note: KYBA is also looking for volunteers who are interested in helping with some light coaching and supervision.  There will be no practices during the summer league; just games, so summer league coaching is mostly cheerleading and encouragement!

Please send an email to springsummerdirector@kanatabasketball.ca if you’re interested in assisting.
