KYBA House League Selects

KYBA SELECTS OVERVIEW

Each KYBA Selects team is made up of House League players who have been selected for the Selects program.  It can also be considered a House League ‘All-Star’ team.

Players are selected by coaches based on their ability and skills, as well as their desire to play basketball, to continue to learn the game and to further improve their skills.  Selects is traditionally a development opportunity for players in the last year of an age division, and a goal for players to work towards leading up to their last year.  Players on competitive teams are not eligible to play on a Selects team.

The main focus of the Selects program is player skill development, and exposure to the competitive style of play. As a result, players are expected to demonstrate greater discipline and attentiveness than might be required on a House League team. The Selects program itself is designed as a complement to the House League, and should not conflict with the participants’ regular House League commitments.

Selects teams may participate in exhibition games and competitive tournaments.  Selects players also continue to play on their House League teams. The Selects program requires more commitment than the House League program alone, but less than the Competitive program.

SELECTION PROCESS

Selects rosters are formed, after house league teams are formed.  Players are recommended and ultimately selected when they demonstrate the required criteria, including:
  • Above average skill level for the player’s age group
  • Excellent “coachability” – discipline, attentiveness and understanding of the game
  • An interest and enthusiasm for the game
  • Commitment to attending practices and games
Selects coaches should explain the structure of the Selects program and the additional commitment required before selecting a player for a Selects team.

Recommendations vs. Tryout – House League coaches are often asked to recommend players for the Selects team. The coach recommendation is to identify players with the right skills, commitment and attitude for the objectives of the Selects program.  If the total number of recommended and/or interested players fits within the guidelines of the team, it may not be necessary to have a tryout.

If more players are interested than can be fit on the teams (more than 14 players per team), then the Selects coaches may elect to run a tryout process.

HOUSE LEAGUE SELECTS PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

The approach to the KYBA Cavaliers Selects program is based on the the following principles and is intended to further support player development within the KYBA.

* Teaching commitment and responsibility - Players are asked to first commit to their responsibilities outside of basketball, such as homework and family obligations.  Players are also expected to first meet the responsibilities of their house league teams.  All participants in the KYBA Selects program are student-athletes and as such it is important that each participant realizes that being part of a Selects team should not take priority over other important responsibilities. We believe that it is wise to teach this responsibility at an early age, and to reinforce this at later ages.

* Making the program accessible to more players – Selects teams are made to accommodate as many players as possible, to allow more players to participate. Players with the skills and, more importantly, the desire to play Selects are given the opportunity to push themselves to further explore their potential.

* Developing skills through practice, scrimmage and games – Selects players are given the opportunity to develop their skills beyond the experience they gain playing in the House League program alone.  Selects coaching staff may run practices that are more demanding than the practices for a normal House League team.  Selects teams will also be given the opportunity to play more competitive games against other teams in the Eastern Ontario region.  Some Selects teams may opt to try a tournament during a house league "off weekend", ie. Family day weekend or March break.

* Facilitating the improvement of the level of play of House League – Through more time on the court and more experience playing at a higher level of competition, Selects players learn leadership and develop skills that they can then apply with their House League teams to help their teammates develop.

* Establishing the foundation for Ottawa Next Level competitive teams – The Selects program is designed to provide players with an introduction to playing competitive-level basketball while providing players that want to try-out for future competitive teams the opportunity to further develop their skills against tougher competition. However, note that participation with a Selects team is neither a guarantee, nor a commitment to play competitive for Ottawa Next Level in future seasons.

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT

The Selects program is reliant on the efforts of family support of each participant. In addition to the additional commitment required by players, players’ parents may also be asked to commit additional time to the Selects team. This includes travel to and from the additional practice and travel to play games against other clubs, or play in tournaments.  (amount of travel depends on the team and age group).

In addition, Selects teams often require parents to help with score keeping duties at games, or the roles of Team Manager and/or Treasurer. It is the efforts of the participants’ families that help to ensure the success of the Selects program.

PRACTICE DETAILS

One of the main benefits of the Selects program is the opportunity for additional practice(s) and additional coaching.  Practice times may also be used for intra-squad scrimmages or exhibition games. Selects coaches will provide further information of the time and location of the additional practice once players have been selected.  Selects teams have an additional weekly practice of 2 hours, over and above their house league team commitments.

EXHIBITION GAMES

Selects teams will also be participating in the EOBA league for some age levels.  For teams that are not directly participating in the EOBA, the coaching staff may schedule exhibition games against competitive level, or other Selects, teams. These games will be scheduled around regular House League activities.  All Selects players are expected to remain committed to their House League teams, and are expected to attend House League practices and games.

In some cases, the number of Selects players may exceed the number of players required for a game (10-12 players). In those cases, the Selects coaching staff will determine which players will be asked to participate for that event. These decisions are solely up to the discretion of the coaching staff and may be based on factors such as:
  • Player skill level
  • Skill level of opposition
  • Effort and commitment demonstrated at practice
  • Attendance at practices
  • Availability
  • Previous decisions on participation
Carrying more than 12 players through the Selects program will allow for flexibility for the coaches, players and parents. Due to the additional time, travel or costs that may be associated with the Selects program, there may be events in which some players will not be able to participate. Carrying additional players in the program will allow for a team to be fielded in cases where some players are unable to participate.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

The Selects program is an extension of the KYBA House League program.  There is an additional cost for players that choose to participate in the Selects program.  There is an $120 Selects registration fee payable to KYBA.  This fee covers Selects uniforms, additional facility access and registration with EOBA.  There will also be team fees payable to the team Treasurer.  These fees are collected to cover the cost of referees for EOBA and exhibition games, tournament entry fees, and any other teambuilding or development the team plans for. Additional costs may also be required if a Selects team chooses to participate in out of town tournaments.

Depending on the level of participation of the Selects team, these costs may vary but will be communicated to players and their families early in the year. Selects coaches should hold a meeting with the parents of potential participants prior to selection, in order to discuss the planned level of competition and expectations for the Selects team, including cost.  Players may also be asked to participate in some fundraising events to help raise funds for the Selects team.
