KYBA Referee Program

In addition to basketball programs (house league and comeptitive), the KYBA has a strong basketball referee program.

The KYBA recognizes the importance of providing an opportunity to its players (current and former) and general members to learn another aspect of the game - officiating. Refereeing provides a great opportunity for young players to further improve their understanding of the game, but also to develop their leadership skills, decision making and management abilities.

Having its own referee program also helps the KYBA to keep the cost of its offerings at an affordable level, while also providing income to our officials.  KYBA officials have also been called upon to help out a number of other basketball associations in our region!

Here are some of the most common questions about KYBA referee program:

Once you become a member of the KYBA referee program and start refereeing games in KYBA House League, here are some important points to know:

For any information that is not covered in this section of the website, please contact KYBA Referee in Chief

Who are the referees in KYBA?

The KYBA Referee program has about 50-60 young referees; primarily current and former KYBA players (House League and Competitive).

Is there an age limit to officiate in KYBA?

Yes, there is the age limit - you need to be 13 years or older - to officiate in the league on regular basis. Younger referees are allowed to attend the training and particiapte in on-court training sessions and perhaps officiate a few games during the season, but not on a regular basis.

Which games do KYBA refeeres officiate?

All of the House League games hosted by KYBA (from Novice to Midget) are officiated by our in-house referees. There about 20-30 games each weekend that are officiated by the KYBA referees.

Depending on the age of the referee, previous experience, and overall officiating skill, the KYBA referees are assigned to various levels of House League games.  Some of the experienced referees will get an opportunity to officiate games of House League Selects teams and/or even some Competitive exhibition games.

Does the KYBA provide training for its referees?

Yes, the KYBA provides the training for new and returning referees.

The training sessions (classroom-type of training as well as on-court training sessions) are organized for the September/October timeframe (before the House League season opens) so that referees are prepared and ready to officiate games when the season starts.

The training does not stop once the season starts. Training is provided throughout the season in a form of "shadowing sessions", younger referees are paired up with more experienced referees during the games, and senior referees provide in-game training.

KYBA also appoints a person for Referee Technical Development who, in collboration with KYBA Referee in Chief, develops and implements training programs and also monitors and performs evaluations of all referees throughout the season.

All games in KYBA House League follow FIBA basketball rules with OBA/KYBA age-based modifications,

Do I get paid to officiate games in KYBA House League?

Yes, referees are paid for each game they officiate.

How do I become a member of the KYBA Referee program?

The dates / locations / times will be published on the KYBA website in early September.  There is a $10 fee to register for the Referee Training Program.  Referee training will start in September and run through October, before the House League season begins.
