Atom Boys Rules

All Atom Boys KYBA HL games will be governed by FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules with Basketball Ontario Age specific modifications.

Full FIBA Ruleset of the rules can be found here. The OBA Age specific modifications are listed here (Section 9, Age-Specific Rules):

KYBA Guidelines for Atom Boys HL:

Equal playing time is in effect for the entire game: No player shall play more than one shift more than any other player.

Half court zone defense and zone presses are not allowed.

Players must play man-to-man defense.

No double teaming or trapping allowed

Screens and picks (on-ball or off-ball) are not allowed.

Here are the summary of the (most frequently asked) rules:

Game Rules:

The game will consist of eight periods of play, of 4 minutes each, stop time.

Substitutions are allowed at the end of shifts only.

After the first period, each period will start in the direction of the possession arrow, and the throw-in shall be from out-of-bounds straddling the centre line extended, opposite the scorers’ table.

Only Half court defense is allowed. No full court press is allowed at any point in the game.

Narrow key (old FIBA) and closer 3-pt line will be in effect.

Timeouts:

During a game, each team receives:

  • Two 60-second timeouts in the first half.
  • Three 60-second timeouts in the second half.
    • NoteOnly two timeouts will be granted in the last two minutes of a game. Coaches must therefore use one timeout before the last two minutes of the game; otherwise they effectively “lose” that timeout.
Timeout  MUST be requested by the coach at the scoring table.

Timeouts are granted only at  “dead ball” situations:
  • After the game is stopped due to a whistle (foul, violations etc)
  • After a basket is made and before the ball is on disposal for the in-bound (only team that is scored upon can request timeout in this situation)
    • Note: in FIBA games timeout cannot be requested/granted on live-ball situations!

Personal fouls:

Each player can have 5 personal fouls in a game. After receiving 5th foul, the player is disqualified for reminder of the game and can no longer be on the floor.

Player is disqualified if receives 2 unsportmenlike or technical fouls.

Bonus:

Bonus (5 teams fouls) is applied per each two shifts which equals a full FIBA period.

3-seconds in the key:

A player shall not remain in the opponents' key for more than 3 consecutive seconds while his/her team is in control of a live ball in the front court and the game clock is running.

To establish himself/herself outside the restricted area, the player must place both feet on the floor outside the restricted area.

Note: The 3-sec counts resets when shot is attempted (by this player or any other player). Whether the ball touches the rim is irrelevant in this situation - the 3-seconds count resets, regardless.

Uniforms:

All players shirts are to be tucked in when on the playing court.

Disconcert the shooter:

Rulings on situations where defenders are "placing hand(s) near to the shooter’s eyes, shouting loudly, stamping feet heavily or clapping hands near the shooter" to disconcert the shooter. This is NOT allowed

Here are the penalties:

Shot Missed leads to Technical Foul.
Shot Made:  Warning to player and communicated to coach.
Shot Made: and there has been a warning, then it’s a Technical foul as well.
