All Novice Boys KYBA HL games will be governed by FIBA (International Basketball Federation) rules with Basketball Ontario Age specific modifications.

KYBA Guidelines for Novice Boys HL:
Equal playing time is in effect for the entire game: No player shall play more than one shift more than any other player.
Half court zone defense and zone presses are not allowed.
Players must play man-to-man defense.
No double teaming or trapping allowed.
Screens and picks (on-ball or off-ball) are not allowed.
Here are the summary of the (most frequently asked) rules:
Game Rules:
The game will consist of 4 minutes periods, running time, allocated game time is 1h
There will be no half-time break, no breaks between shifts and no time-outs except if injury occurs.
Substitutions are allowed at the end of shifts only.
After the first period, each period will start in the direction of the possession arrow, and the throw-in shall be from out-of-bounds straddling the centre line extended..
Only Half court defense is allowed. No full court press is allowed at any point in the game. No time limitation wil be imposed to get the ball over the center court (i.e. no 8-second violations will be called).
The score will not be kept at any point in the season.
No 3-second in-the-key violations will be called.
Shooting fouls will be awarded one free throw. The attempt may be taken from anywhere within the key. If the attempt is successful, the defensive team takes the ball out of bounds. If unsuccessful, the offensive team inbounds on the baseline of the defending team.
All other fouls will result in possession transferred to the fouled team. No bonus foul shots will be awarded and no foul counts will be kept on players or teams
- SPECIAL NOTE – It is recommended that wherever possible, coaches agree to a 4-on-4 format for Novice games. The 4-on-4 format usually allows for more opportunities for all of the players to handle the ball. t also creates more space for players to use the skills learned in practice. The guiding principle in Novice games is training and development not competition.
